Biden Struggles Through Incomprehensible Joke About Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and Brazil at Turkey Pardoning
President Joe Biden struggled through an incomprehensible joke about Taylor Swift’s concert in Rio de Janeiro during the turkey pardoning ceremony at the White House on Monday after a woman died due to the heat at Swift’s performance there on Friday night.
Biden was waxing poetic about the virtues of this year’s recipient Liberty, and its alternate Bell when he made the insensitive attempt at a joke.
“Now, just to get here, Liberty and Bell had to beat some tough odds and competition,” began Biden. “They had to work hard to show patience and be willing to travel over a thousand miles. You could say even it’s harder than getting a ticket to the Renaissance Tour, or, or Britney’s tour. She’s down in- it’s kind of warm in Brazil right now.”
Biden’s reference to Britney Spears was an apparent mistake. It was Swift, not Spears who performed in Rio de Janiero over the weekend, and whose tour made international headlines when a woman died at one of her performances there.
From the Washington Post report on the tragic incident:
RIO DE JANEIRO — A woman died Friday night after attending a show for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Rio de Janeiro during sweltering temperatures, according to concert organizers, prompting the star performer to cancel her next performance as record heats continue to scorch this seaside metropolis.
The woman — 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado — was first brought to paramedics after feeling unwell, according to a statement released by Time4Fun, the show organizers, on Instagram. She was taken to the Nilton Santos Stadium’s first aid center, then transported to a hospital, where she died. She suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, according to a statement from the Brazil’s Ministry of Culture, but an official cause of death has not yet been announced
According to reports, the air temperature reached a high of 102 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday with the sun and humidity making it feel much hotter. Swift postponed her show scheduled for Saturday and released a statement in which she said she was “overwhelmed by grief.”
