United States Senate
WASHINGTON, OC 20510
November 16, 2023
Dear Ms. Bush,
Thank you for your recent response to our letter regarding your nomination to the Smithsonian
Board of Regents. While we appreciate your commitment io ensuring that “all viewpoints are
‘welcome in Smithsonian facilities,” your letter did not adequately answer two of the four specific
questions that we originally asked you. Your statement that “reflecting the lives of all Americans
risks creating discomfort for some, and the Institution should manage that risk carefully,” does
not offer any real insight into how you would exercise your powers on the Board of Regents to
limit the Smithsonian's unfortunate trend of promoting ideologically motivated, divisive content
instead of offering non-partisan content to “increase the diffusion of knowledge,” in accord with
the Smithsonian’s mission.
Given this, we have restated the two unanswered question below and would appreciate a prompt,
candid response to the exact questions that reflects your individual views:
1, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian hosted an event on June 23,
2023 to feature “indigenous drag performers” for a night of “extravaganza of dance,
music, and humor.” This event does not appear to have included any age restrictions. '
a. Do you think that taxpayer dollars should be subsidizing drag shows?
b. Do you think that it is appropriate to allow children to attend publicly funded drag
shows featuring lewd and sexually suggestive content? Even if no children
attended the event on June 23%, as you claim, itis still alarming that the
Smithsonian took no precautions to prevent them from being exposed to this
inappropriate content.
¢. Ifyou do not think it is appropriate for taxpayers to subsidize drag shows, how do
you intend to use your position on the Board of Regents to discourage the
Smithsonian from hosting such taxpayer funded events in the future?
2. According to recent reports, the Smithsonian’s American Women’s History Museum,
which was established by Congress under 20 U.S.C. §80t, plans to include materials
featuring biological men who claim to be women in an effort to be “inclusive.” ?
a. Do you think it is appropriate for American Women’s History Museum to include
biological males when Congress did not authorize this inclusion?
b. Ifnot, how do you intend to use your position to ensure that the American
‘Women’s History Museum honors women, according to Congress” intention?
