Demand Cornell University to Fire Assoc. Professor Russell Rickford for Hate Speech

Demand Cornell University to Fire Assoc. Professor Russell Rickford for Hate Speech

The Issue

As a concerned citizen, and parent of a Cornell Alumnus, I am deeply disturbed by the actions of Associate Professor Russell Rickford at Cornell University. His hate speech, endorsing  brutal murder, burning, rape and abduction of innocent civilians by Hamas in Southern Israel on October 7, 2023 is not only abhorrent but also against the principles of humanity. Among other vile comments, Rickford characterized this horrific and barbaric attack as “exhilarating” and “exciting.” This kind of behavior is unacceptable from an individual who holds a position that influences young minds.

Cornell University by allowing an individual who promotes violence and hatred to continue teaching tarnishes its reputation and integrity. It's important to note that freedom of speech does not include promoting harm or violence towards any group or individuals such as Mr. Rickford's rhetoric endorses.

As we all know, there has been a significant increase in antisemitic hate crimes globally over recent years. According to research from the Anti-Defamation League it is clear that hate speech often precedes these crimes (source: ADL Global 100). By allowing this behavior to continue unchecked within their faculty and staff, Cornell University contributes towards this growing problem.

We must hold our educators accountable for their words and actions as they play a crucial role in shaping future generations. Therefore we demand that Cornell University take immediate action by terminating Associate Professor Rickford's employment due to his heinous acts.

Please sign this petition if you believe in justice and want our educational institutions free from hate speech.
