NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- The estranged son of Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake has been confirmed as the suspect wanted for shooting two La Vergne Police officers. John C. Drake Jr., 38, now faces two counts of attempted first degree murder.

Drake, Jr., a convicted felon, is charged with opening fire at the two officers outside a Dollar General on Saturday, during an investigation involving a stolen car, according to La Vergne Police Chief Chris Moews.

The officers were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and have since been released. Drake Jr. is currently on the run.

Residents in the Lake Forest were asked to lock their doors and stay inside for most of Saturday. The shelter-in-place order was lifted just before midnight.

MNPD Chief John Drake issued the following statement:

“I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn that my estranged son, with whom I have had very minimal contact over many years, is the suspect in this afternoon’s shooting of the two La Vergne police officers. My thoughts and prayers are with the two officers, who I understand are now in stable condition at Vanderbilt.
Despite my efforts and guidance in the early and teenage years, my son, John Drake Jr., now 38-years-old, resorted to years of criminal activity and is a convicted felon. He has not been a part of my life for quite some time. He now needs to be found and held accountable for his actions today. I hope that anyone who sees him or has information about him will contact law enforcement immediately.”

Mayor Freddie O'Connell issued the following statement on the matter:

"My heart goes out to Chief Drake, his family, and the two wounded LaVergne police officers. I know that despite our best efforts -- including in their early years -- we can't be responsible for the choices of family members. I support Chief Drake and stand by him at this difficult time. He is the right Chief of Police for Nashville."

Drake Jr. is considered armed and dangerous, according to Metro PD. The 38-year-old is described as a black male, 5'11" with a muscular build, facial hair, and dreadlocks.

He was last seen wearing a black tee shirt with red lettering and a white hockey mask emblem on the front, and grey pants.

The TBI says they are continuing to pursue all leads, and tips may develop on the search for Drake Jr. The agency adds his location is still unknown at this time.

Anyone who knows of his whereabouts is asked to call 1-800-TBI-FIND.
