Man shot, killed in NE DC marks District's 200th homicide of 2022, police union says

A man was shot and killed Thursday night in northeast D.C., marking the District's 200th homicide of the calendar year, the D.C. Police Union said.

The shooting took place in the 2700 block of7th Street Northeast. Friday morning, the victim was identified as 50-year-old Aniekobo Macaulay Umoh, of Brandywine, Maryland.

D.C. police said they are looking for a red SUV with four people, last seen heading west in the 600 block of Franklin Street Northeast.

The 200th homicide of 2022 comes after 226 homicides took place in 2021, and 198 occurred in 2020, despite COVID lockdowns.

"This is the first time since 2002-2003 that DC has suffered back-to-back years with 200-plus homicides," the D.C. Police Union tweeted.

There have been 476 carjackings in 2022, which is up 14% from 2021, and 2,057 robberies, which is up 2%, the police union tweeted.

Later Thursday, two men were shot and one was killed near a Busboys and Poets restaurant in Southeast, marking the 201st homicide of the year.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.
