State Senator Brian P. Stack (D-33) denounced President Barack Obama’s efforts to restore diplomatic ties with Cuba, and said he intends to closely examine the Democratic Party’s foreign policy positions in advance of the next election to make sure his party undoes what Obama wrought.
“The U.S. made a deal with a Cuban dictator,” Stack told PolitickerNJ. “It’s a disgrace. Castro’s basically laughing at the United States right now. Policies like that is what make Democrats look weak.”
Short of booting Fidel Casto and his regime and having free elections in Cuba, Stack criticized attempts at normalized negotiations with this ongoing iteration of Cuba.
A noted Democratic supporter of Republican Governor Chris Christie, who’s hovering at the edge of a presidential run – Stack said Democrats need to get their Cuban policy under control and redirected.
Pronto.
“Whether it’s Hillary Clinton or someone else, they better take a hard look at this,” said Stack, whose Union City contains a dominant Cuban American population. “Definitely it’s an issue. I’ve been passionate about this for many years. The message we send out there on communism in general is wrong. It’s a major, major issue the fact that the Cuban government is harboring a cop killer – Joanne Chesimard. How did anyone not think about that?
“This would definitely play a decision on who I would back for president,” the Hudson power broker added. “I have never gotten involved in presidential politics because it’s such a personal issue, but this is the type of thing that could get me into presidential politics.”
A key ally of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Union City mayor who has close on-the-ground ties to Stack, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) similarly criticized Obama on Cuba.
Stack doubled down.
“For the president not to consult Bob Menendez and seek his guidance, it’s a slap in the face to New Jersey, Menendez and the entire Cuban population,” Stack said.
The senator already spoke to Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) this morning about drawing up a resolution condemning Obama’s Cuba policy.
