US OFFICIALS SAY KING CROSSED INTO NORTH KOREA SHORTLY AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM A DETENTION FACILITY IN SOUTH KOREA. KING SERVED SOME TIME ON ASSAULT CHARGES AND WAS SUPPOSED TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE AIRPORT TO RETURN TO THE US TO FACE MILITARY DISCIPLINARY ACTION. BUT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS HE CROSSED INTO NORTH KOREA INSTEAD. THE UNITED STATES WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY SAYS SEVERAL AGENCIES ARE NOW WORKING ON THE MATTER. WE BELIEVE THE SOLDIER IS CURRENTLY IN DPRK CUSTODY AND ARE WORKING WITH OUR NORTH KOREAN COUNTERPARTS TO RESOLVE THIS INCIDENT. A U.S. soldier detained in North Korea has a Wisconsin connection, WISN 12 News has learned. U.S. officials tell ABC News that 23-year-old Private 2nd Class Travis King crossed into North Korea shortly after being released from prison in South Korea.Officials said King served some time on assault charges and was supposed to go straight to the airport to return to the U.S. to face military disciplinary action.King's mother lives in Racine and told ABC News she was shocked when she heard the news."I can’t see Travis doing anything like that," Claudine Gates said. Gates said the Army told her on Tuesday her son had crossed into North Korea.The American-led United Nations command said it is working with its North Korean counterparts to resolve the situation.Racine Unified School District said King attended Park High School and graduated in 2020.King has served in the Army for more than two years. "I’m so proud of him. I just want him to come home, come back to America," Gates told ABC News.

Gates said the Army told her on Tuesday her son had crossed into North Korea.
