SPS Release a Statement of Support for LGBTQ+ Students/Staff

SPS Release a Statement of Support for LGBTQ+ Students/Staff
The Issue
We, residents of the Springfield, and surrounding area, MO R-12 School District, petition the School Board to vote on making a statement of support for the queer students and staff who are enrolled in/work for the Springfield Public Schools (SPS). Specifically, we call on the SPS Board to vote on the draft statement submitted by Dr. Kyler J. Sherman-Wilkins during the September 6th board meeting.
We believe that while such a statement does not address all of the concerns faced by queer students and staff, it is a necessary first step to ensuring that said students and staff are welcomed and supported at SPS.
We demand this action be taken immediately.
Signing this petition allows us to have a bigger voice within the board room. The board will know it’s not the concern of just one or two Springfield citizens. A small statement isn’t much to ask of the board but it will speak volumes to families in our community. 1/5 Gen Z students identify within the LGBTQ+ community. Over 65% say they experienced bullying or feel unsafe at school. 45% of them have suicidal thoughts or attempts. Let’s help change those stats and let them know they are not alone. Will you join us?
