New iPad Pro will have Face ID and USB-C, report says

Apple's next-gen iPads will reportedly look a lot like its new iPhones.

According to 9to5mac, which cites "sources familiar with the development of the new 2018 iPad Pro," Apple's new tablets will add Face ID and ditch the Home button, like the iPhone XS and XR. But unlike those new devices, the updated iPads will reportedly add USB-C and a Mac-like magnetic connector.

In previous years, Apple has unveiled new iPads in October, though in 2017, new iPad Pros made their debut at WWDC. This year, 9to5mac says, we'll see new iPads this month.

That USB-C connection will be able to output 4K HDR video to external displays, the blog says. A new panel in the Settings app will also let users control brightness, HDR, resolution, and other settings pertinent to managing external displays.

The move is a little surprising given that the newest iPhones stuck with Apple's Lightning connectors. Still, Appe has embraced USB-C on its MacBooks, so making the switch on iPads would mean they'd work with more Apple hardware, as well as a litany of USB-C-powered Android devices, which could help Apple's push into the enterprise with iPad.

Face ID, meanwhile, will work in both portrait and landscape mode, 9to5mac says, although it won't work if you're holding the iPad upside down. There also won't be a notch; the thinner bezels will be wide enough for the TrueDepth camera system.
